Northern Territory to build youth detention centre next to jail

NT Families Minister Dale Wakefield has ignored the Royal Commission by building a new youth justice centre next to an adult jail.

The Northern Territory Government has defended its decision to build a new $60 million youth detention centre next to Darwin's adult prison.

The Royal Commission into the Detention and Protection of Children in 2017 recommended that a new youth justice facility not be built near an adult jail.

Territory Families Minister Dale Wakefield said the new centre would not be "in the line of sight" of the adult centre but admitted it was not her first choice for a location.
