Sagan delays season start after COVID diagnosis

After testing positive for COVID-19 at the end of January, Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) does not feel ready for the traditional opening weekend of the classics season, Omloop Het Nieuwsblad (February 27) and Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne (February 28), where he had hoped to make his season start.

Peter Sagan has been forced to postpone his return to racing. The three-time world champion had hoped to start the season with the opening weekend of the Flandrian classics.

Sagan tested positive for COVID on January 29 during a team training camp in Spain with his brother Juraj and his teammate Erik Baska. The Slovak star was placed in solitary confinement for ten days, delaying his preparation.

Sagan has not shown any serious symptoms of the disease: he has already resumed training, but just does not feel ready to be competitive by the end of the month in Belgium. New recruit Nils Politt is expected to take the lead for Bora-Hansgrohe in both races after transferring from Israel Start-Up Nation.

Sagan, who hopes to compete in the Giro and the Tour this year, is still uncertain what his first race will be in 2021.
