Scotson abandons as Stage 11 claims early casualties

Australian Miles Scotson (Groupama-FDJ) has been forced out of the Tour de France after succumbing to sickness, joining five other riders as casualties of the mountainous Stage 11.

Scotson began the journey to the double climb of the Mont Ventoux seemingly fine and prepared to support David Gaudu's GC hopes, but saw his race come to an end 80 kilometres in amid rumours of an illness in the French team, as Gaudu was later dropped at the 90 kilometre mark.

Groupama-FDJ confirmed the news in a tweet which reads, "Miles Scotson had been in trouble since the start of the stage. He just gave up on #TDF2021." when translated from French.
Scotson's withdrawal now leaves the French team with just four riders left in the race, having already lost sprinter Arnaud Demare to the time gap on stage 8 among others.

The stage has already forced out six riders including Scotson, with Tony Martin (Jumbo-Visma), Tiesj Benoot (Team DSM), Dan McLay and Clement Russo (both Arkea-Samsic) and Tosh Van der Sande (Lotto Soudal) all failing to conquer another testing stage as the fallout from the first brutal week of the race continues.
