A Brazilian teenager has been stabbed to death by his mother, allegedly because he was gay.

According to local reports, Tatiana Lozano Pereira hired two men to beat her 17-year-old son Itaberli Lozano on December 29.  When they refused to kill him, she took a kitchen knife and fatally stabbed him herself.

The charred body of Itaberli Lozano was found in a cane field near Cravinhos in the state of Sao Paulo on January 7. Police believe Lozano Pereira and her husband - Itaberli’s stepfather - are responsible for disposing of the body.

The victim’s paternal uncle - Dario Rosa - has told local media that Itaberli was murdered because his mother did not accept his sexuality.  Police have denied this theory, saying the pair had a long history of disagreements.

Following her arrest, Lozano Pereira admitted to killing her son after a heated argument but has since denied taking part in the murder.

Three men have also been arrested in connection with the murder and Lozano Pereira remains in custody.
