Los Angeles drag performer Maebe A. Girl has become the first drag queen elected to office, successfully running for Silver Lake Neighborhood Council in California.

Girl, who identifies as non-binary and uses the pronouns she/her or they/them, took to social media to celebrate the historic win, writing: "Time to take on the system!"

Known by locals for her political satire, Girl ran on a platform of diversity and inclusion, with a focus on supporting small businesses and enhancing public spaces.
"I’m honored to be the first drag queen elected official here in L.A. and, I believe, in all of California and the West Coast," Girl said, according to Advocate.

"I can’t wait to use my new platform to advance the LGBTQ community and provide visibility for those that have historically been kept in the shadows of society. I hope my successful run inspires others to do the same in their own communities."

She will be sworn into office on May 1.
