A new retirement home will aim to provide free medical facilities, food and accommodation to elderly members of the Pakistani transgender community.

The home, which is set to open in Lahore, was founded by local trans woman Aashi Butt and comes after the country's first transgender school opened in the same region earlier this year.
Despite not having received any financial assistance from the government or non-governmental LGBTIQ+ organisations, Butt says that she's poured all of her own savings into the home, in the hope that it'll become a safe haven for those in the transgender community.

“I’ve spent all of my earnings from dancing and singing on this project,” she told local newspaper The Tribune.

“These people, rejected by their loved ones, can live in this old home like a big family. Will be together in each other’s sorrow and happiness,” she added.
Around 60 people have already registered their interest for the old home, which opens from Ramadan on May 16th.
