Despite not receiving a nomination for her performance, the star of A Fantastic Woman Daniela Vega will become the first openly trans person to present an Academy Award on March 5.

The Chilean actress will be joining the likes of Australia's Margot Robbie, Mahershala Ali, Chadwick Boseman, Laura Dern, and Viola Davis on stage.

Premiering last year at Berlin Film Festival to critical acclaim, A Fantastic Woman was Vega’s international debut. Her character in the film, Marina, is forced to deal with her partner’s untimely death and his family’s transphobia, while also grappling with her identity and grief.
At the time, Variety called Vega’s performance “a multi-layered, emotionally polymorphous feat of acting.”

On the role of transgender people in cinema, Vega said: "If we broaden our gaze, it will be more interesting, more beautiful,” she said.

She continued: “If we can make more diverse colours, people, and stories, it will be interesting. Uniforms are for the military and the police, not for our thinking.”

The 90th Academy Awards will take place on March 5 in Los Angeles.
