Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has weighed in on the ongoing controversy surrounding former Vice President Joe Biden's behaviour towards women.
Speaking on ABC's This Week program, the New York representative said: “I don’t think voters think he’s necessarily guilty of sexual misconduct or anything like that."
She continued: “I do think there may be some discomfort,” referencing Biden telling a 13-year-old girl’s brothers to “keep the guys away” from her during a campaign trail stop.
“People tend to interpret these situations as one way or another – is he a bad person or is he a good person? I don’t think it’s about that,” she said. “It’s not about right and wrong sometimes, it’s just about whether feeling like someone gets it or not.”
Ocasio-Cortez, who has been open about her support for Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren in the upcoming Democratic primaries, suggested Biden’s behaviour be viewed within the “cultural evolution we’re having as a country”, adding that Biden hasn’t “necessarily convinced all women” that he “gets it".
“I wouldn’t look at this through a partisan lens, I think this is part of the evolution we’ve been having as a country,” Ocasio-Cortez said on the program.
Over the weekend Ocasio-Cortez also made a bleak prediction for the Democratic party, saying that if Democrats are unable to nominate a presidential candidate who is “fighting for true transformational change in the lives of working people,” there would be a “very real risk” of Trump being elected for a second term in 2020.
