There was no mistaking the shift in the 75th Golden Globe Awards, most notably the crowd of black gowns and tuxedos as stars expressed solidarity with the #MeToo movement.
However, Meher Tatna, the president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association stood out from the crowd, wearing red to this year’s ceremony. It may seem like a bold move to some but for Indian-born Tatna, wearing black is reserved for widows in mourning, and according to The Cut, donning black would go against her culture.

“My mum and I planned this together a couple of months ago, it is a cultural thing,” the Mumbai-born journalist told ET. “When you have a celebration, you don’t wear black. [My mum] would be appalled if I were to [have] worn black’. And so this is for my mum.”
While she may have worn red, Tatna is clearly in solidarity with the #MeToo movement, sporting the #TimesUp initiatives black pin. “The HFPA is 60 per cent women, we’ll have our stories. We are also journalists, so anybody who expresses themselves, especially on this topic, we are in solidarity with,” she said.
Ahead of the ceremony, which saw actresses walk the red carpet with eight different activists including #MeToo movement founder Tarana Burke, Tatna told Vanity Fair that she welcomed the all-black protest. “I am really glad that women are finally feeling safe enough to come forward and talk about their experiences,” she said. “I’m really glad that they found that power, and I hope that this is a time of profound change.”
