Canadian actor Colin Mochrie and his transgender daughter Kinley have appeared in a joint interview, explaining how improv helped them communicate.
The former Whose Line Is It Anyway? star told The National that using the "Yes, and” technique—the basis of improv—was helpful when Kinley first came out as trans.
“We’ve started saying yes — within limits — and it’s taken us to these amazing places and amazing people. So I do think improv actually did help with this,” said Mochrie, continuing, “You accept what someone has given you and you build on that”.
Mochrie has previously shared on Twitter that his 90-year-old mother-in-law and 87-year-old mother are also supportive of Kinley—although he had no idea how much attention the tweet would receive.
The actor recalled worrying about Kinley's safety when she first came out, as well as wondering what it would mean for their relationship.
“You go through this thing ‘now my child has changed gender, does that mean that previous child is now gone?'"
But Mochrie soon realised that Kinley was the "exact same kid" with a "different coat on".
Kinley says “it took some time but I knew that support and acceptance was on the other side” but that she wasn’t worried for a second how her parents would react.

When asked if she was nervous about transgender rights in the Trump era, Kinley said, “We’re at a point where we’re ready to fight…and not take it anymore.”
