After decades of fighting for recognition, a multi-million dollar national postal survey, countless rallies, marches and protests, several potential amendments, and 90+ speakers in the Lower House - it's finally official.

Same-sex marriage is officially legal in Australia!

The House of Representatives sat this week to discuss Liberal Senator Dean Smith's same-sex marriage bill, and the bill was passed into law.

So, after a decades-long battle and a particularly difficult year, same-sex marriage is officially legal in Australia, and all overseas same-sex marriages are retrospectively recognised as legal as well.
The LGBTQI+ community and allies are absolutely overjoyed, celebrating the news on social media:
FYI: There is a month's notice period before getting married in Australia, so you have until mid-January before you'll have to start attending all you loved ones' long-awaited weddings.
