Earlier today, BuzzFeed published allegations made by Star Trek actor Anthony Rapp that Kevin Spacey made sexual advances on him when he was just 14.
Rapp told BuzzFeed that Spacey had befriended him while they were both performing in Broadway shows in 1986 and invited the then-teenager to a party at his Manhattan apartment.
“He picked me up like a groom picks up the bride over the threshold," Rapp said. "But I don't, like, squirm away initially, because I'm like, 'What's going on?' And then he lays down on top of me.”
Hours after the article was published, Spacey posted a statement to Twitter, apologising to Rapp while stating that he didn’t remember the encounter.
“But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behaviour, and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years.”
Spacey then briskly moved on to announce his public coming out, writing that he's choosing “to live as a gay man”.
The actor has been strongly criticised for using his sexuality to brush away the very serious allegations of sexual assault and for perpetuating the stereotype that gay men are paedophiles.
Rapp has now commented on his Twitter page, saying he was able to raise his voice because he was "standing on the shoulders of the many courageous men and women who have been speaking out."
