The ABC network in the United States is copping some flack from viewers after they appeared to censor actor Laverne Cox's speech at yesterday's Emmy Awards.

Having used last year's event to make a statement on Supreme Court cases involving the rights of LGBTQ+ people, Cox decided to again get something off her chest, this time while presenting an award.

"Good evening everyone," the Orange Is The New Black star, who looked gorgeous in a sheer black gown, said.

"I am living proof of the American dream that anyone in this country can lose the Emmy four years in the same category and yet somehow end up on this stage presenting an award to someone who probably didn't ..."

Cox's speech was then muted for several moments by the ABC, impacting all US viewers.
"What happens to an American dream deferred?" she continued, when audio resumed.

"Does it shrivel up like a raisin in the sun? Stick to the script Laverne, stick to the script. And now here are the nominees for Writing in a Drama Series."

Canadian viewers were quick to note that the segment was not censored for them, and the full speech has since been uploaded to the Television Academy's YouTube account.

According to the footage, Cox was muted while saying: "presenting an award to someone who probably didn't effing vote for me."
