Hollywood powerhouse Lena Waithe has revealed that she and longtime girlfriend Alana Mayo recently tied the knot.

The writer, director and producer shared the happy news during an interview with musician John Legend, who was filling in for Ellen DeGeneres on The Ellen Show.

Unsurprisingly, it wasn't your typical Hollywood wedding - with the pair saying 'I do' at a courthouse in San Francisco.

“We snuck and did it,” Waithe told Legend. “You know, I didn’t make any announcements.”

Waithe said the low-key courthouse wedding had been Mayo's suggestion.

“We went to San Francisco,” Waithe continued. “We went to the courthouse, got married right in front of Harvey Milk’s bust. It was her idea, as all good things are."
She explained: “She was just driving and she saw the courthouse and she said, ‘We should get married there.’

“It was a humbling day, you know, to marry someone so amazing,” she said. “But also to really appreciate all the work that so many people have put in to be able to do that.

Legend responded saying it's "beautiful that you can live your full truth and be in love and declare it to the world."

“Everybody should be able to do that,” Waithe replied.

According to Out magazine, the happy couple's chosen courthouse was significant for more reason than one. It just so happened to be the location of the first legal same-sex marriage ceremony in the United States.
