Social media users have been left with no choice but to stan, following two incredible performances from Lizzo and Missy Elliot at the 2019 Video Music Awards in New York.

Taking to the stage with a legion of dancers in front of a giant, inflatable booty, Lizzo performed hit track ‘Truth Hurts’ before rocking older song ‘Good As Hell’.

The star, who was recently featured on Barrack Obama's personal Summer playlist, then delivered a touching sermon on self-love, telling the audience: “You deserve to feel good as hell."

Lizzo is nominated for two VMA awards: Push Artist Of The Year and Best New Artist, where she comes up against artist of the moment Lil Nas X.

However, her performance hasn't been the only highlight of the program so far, with hip-hop icon Missy Elliott serving up a show-stopping moment.

Elliott took to the stage following Lizzo, delivering a truly epic, career-spanning medley that went for over seven minutes and included a mammoth five costume changes.

The legend, who was in attendance to accept the VMA’s lifetime achievement award, the Video Vanguard, performed tracks such as 'The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)' and 'Work It'.

Accepting her award, she said she was "so humbly grateful", before somewhat controversially referring to her trophy by its full name: the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.
