Nike has released a short commercial celebrating the upcoming 2020 Chinese Lunar New Year, which marks the Year of the Rat on the Chinese Zodiac calendar.
Releasing a special line of colourful shoes and clothing to mark the occasion, the company employed creative agency Folkative TV to create video spot that is both heartwarming and hilarious; demonstrating the funny side of the Chinese Aunty gift tussle and culture of declining gifts as a mark of, as Australian writer Benjamin Law put it, "respect, humility and graciousness".
The commercial shows a young girl refusing to accept her determined auntie's envelope of money during her family's New Year celebrations - a back-and-forth tussle that leads to the aunt chasing her niece cross-country in her Chinese New Year Nike runners.
Eventually, however, the aunt catches up - insistently placing her cash gift into her niece's hand.
"Thanks auntie," the niece replies breathlessly.
"Let's go home."
The ad beautifully demonstrates an idea that social media user Jada Chin surmised perfectly - "you can't out run the generous auntie."
