The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is constructing all-gender toilets for Olympic venues in the city to “expand the spirit of inclusivity and diversity”, according to The Asahi Shimbun.

Maki Muraki, head of nonprofit organisation Nijiiro Diversity (Rainbow-colored diversity), has praised the decision.

“Along with the effort to increase the number of public toilets, to raise people's awareness that those who do not look like a typical man or woman can use a toilet as a matter of course is also important.”

The ‘daredemo toire’ (everyone’s toilets) are designed for use by any gender and are also large enough to accommodate wheelchairs.

Japan has also simplified the eight symbols for flushing, cleansing and drying functions to avoid confusing tourists during the 2020 Olympics.
