The first transgender woman to win a major party’s nomination for governor claims to be receiving death threats.

Christine Hallquist says the threats began when she won Vermont’s Democratic gubernatorial primary earlier this month.

“Early on when our team assembled I said 'the more successful we are, the more vitriol and threats we are going to receive,’” Hallquist said Tuesday, according to NBC.

She added: “It’s kind of a natural outcome of our divided country.”
The threats, which have been reported as coming from outside of Vermont, have lead to added caution surrounding her public campaign appearances.

According to The Independent, when an out-of-state guest asked about an upcoming campaign stop, Hallquist was hesitant to share specific details.

“Normally, I wouldn’t have thought about it, but we decided not to tell them about events because they are not from Vermont,” she said.

“I’m sure it’s perfectly innocent, but with a little heightened awareness, we’re just taking a little extra precaution.”

Her opponent, incumbent Republican Gov. Phil Scott, was quick to condemn the threats.
"I won't tolerate it," he told NBC10 Boston.

"I think it's important that we treat each other with respect and civility. It's something I've practised throughout my life."

He continued: “We must — as a society — do better to combat anger and violence.

“I’m hopeful Vermonters will join me in ensuring everyone — regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion or other characteristics — are treated with dignity, respect and acceptance.”
