Academy Award winner Viola Davis will soon step into the shoes of former first lady Michelle Obama as part of new Showtime series First Ladies.

BBC reports Obama, Eleanor Roosevelt and Betty Ford will be front and centre in the first season of the show, which was written by novelist Aaron Cooley. The series will delve into the political and private lives of the US first ladies, while highlighting the influence Obama had during her husband's time as President between 2008 and 2016.

Having met multiple times, in 2017 Davis shared a tribute to Obama in a Facebook post. Accompanying a photograph of the pair together, the actress wrote: "May you continue to shine your light and impact future generations to come."

According to Deadline, Davis will executive produce the one-hour White House drama, which has received a three-script commitment from Showtime.
