When weightlifters and longtime couple Lisa Yang and Wek Hernandez got married in New York last month, the pair thought it was only fitting to bring their passion for exercise to the ceremony.

The brides, who each wore beautiful white gowns, performed several deadlifts together following the ceremony - to the tune of 115kg. And while a couple of the bridesmaids might appear shocked by the non-traditional choice, the pair insisted it was representative of their strength as a couple.

The resulting photos, taken by wedding photographer Eileen Meny, are pretty spectacular.
“We thought about the usual candle lighting, tree planting, sand pouring, and none of those things represented Wek and I,” Yang told Women’s Health.

She continued, explaining that deadlifts aren't their favourite exercise, “but a snatch or clean-and-jerk in dresses might be a bit dangerous, so we settled on three deadlifts."

Hernandez added: “It was meant to not only be a symbol of unity but also a statement: ‘Individually, we are strong, capable women, but together we are stronger.'"

“I was just so happy and in the moment!” Hernandez said.

“I mean, we were deadlifting in Prospect Park in wedding gowns professing our love. It was awesome!”
