Compelling SBS news specials nominated at 39th News & Documentary Emmy Awards

The nominations are in and several documentaries well-known to SBS viewers are up for awards.

The nominations for the 39th Annual News and Documentary Emmy® Awards were announced overnight in the US. A separate award show to the Primetime Emmy Awards, which are broadcast here in Australia, these awards will be presented on Monday 1 October 2018 during a ceremony in New York. The nominations include several of the documentary and news programs broadcast locally on SBS, SBS VICELAND, and streaming at SBS On Demand.

“New technologies are opening up endless new doors to knowledge, instantly delivering news and information across myriad platforms,” said Adam Sharp, interim President & CEO, National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. “With this trend comes the immense potential to inform and enlighten, but also to manipulate and distort. Today we honor the talented professionals who through their work and creativity defend the highest standards of broadcast journalism and documentary television, proudly providing the clarity and insight each of us needs to be an informed world citizen.”

Receiving two nominations was the outstanding Ken Burns documentary series The Vietnam War

VICE News Tonight received 9 nominations for stories filed through 2017, including Battle for Marawi, Battle for Marawi: On the Hunt for ISIS Militants, Charlottesville: Race and Terror, Libya, Libya: Intercepting Migrants, and Trump's White House: Inauguration Day.

SBS viewers with a keen interest in US politics will be familiar with the high quality PBS FRONTLINE series, which was nominated for 14 awards. Those nominees that have also aired on SBS include Divided States of America, Putin's Revenge, and Bannon's War.

The PBS Newshour, a longtime SBS afternoon staple, was also nominated for two awards for its stories Ear Hustle and America Addicted.
