We’re just weeks away from the (16 January) premiere of Paolo Sorrentino’s lavish exploration of the high drama within the hallowed corridors of The Vatican, The New Pope.

The new series picks up where The Young Pope left off, and stars Jude Law as Pius XIII (aka Lenny Belardo), the first American Pope in history, and John Malkovich as Sir John Brannox.

The new trailer, out today, whets our appetites ahead of the show’s exclusive premiere at SBS On Demand on Thursday 16 January.

The evocative trailer reveals that Sir John as has succeeded Lenny to the pinnacle of the Catholic Church, but as John Paul III, he is finding that Lenny casts a long shadow and isn’t all that easy to replace – especially when he comes out of that coma...

In the period he was hanging between life and death, Lenny Belardo has become a Saint and thousands of faithful are now idolising him, fueling the contrast between fundamentalisms. The Church is under attack from several scandals that risk devastating the hierarchies irreversibly and from external threats striking the symbols of Christianity. As always, however, in the Vatican nothing is what it seems. Good and evil proceed arm in arm towards history. And to reach the showdown we must wait for the events to take their course…

The New Pope is an SBS On Demand exclusive. The series will premiere on SBS at a later date in 2020.
