It's no secret that New York congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a pretty big fan of RuPaul's Drag Race.

Earlier this year, the politician took to social media to express her frustration at fan-favourite Nina West being eliminated from the popular reality competition.

Ocasio-Cortez tweeted: “In our house, we name a Queen of Hearts. @NinaWest that is YOU!"

She added: “Thank you for being a relentless example of kindness, consciousness, compassion, and courage. Thank you for using your gifts to focus on voices + issues that deserve all the shine and elevation in the world."

Then, in July, she surprised a room full of LGBTIQ+ people when she swung by a local drag night, where she was pulled onto stage and told the crowd: “You are beautiful. You are accepted.”

However, this week Ocasio-Cortez finally got to meet one of her favourite drag stars - Drag Race season 9 winner Sasha Velour. The iconic duo met backstage after Ocasio-Cortez attended the Washington, D.C. performance of Velour’s Smoke & Mirrors theatre show.

“It was amazing. It was incredible. It was fabulous,” Ocasio-Cortez said of Velour's show in a video of the pair meeting.
“I’m like that Lady Gaga moment where she’s like ‘Stunning, amazing, impeccable, genius.’ It was just incredible,” she continued.

“Can you believe? From the revolutionary of our time,” Sasha Velour said.

“I love you so much thank you for being here.”

In a follow-up tweet, Velour wrote: “You are truly an inspiration."

She added: “Thank you for all you do to support our queer family. What a brilliant human, I’m still overwhelmed from this meeting!”
